See you later, SiteFinder

July 22, 2004

Unlike Michael Jordan and the Monkeys, it appears that SiteFinder won't be making a comeback.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) announced that Verisign's system of redirecting users who type in bad domain names shouldn't be rerouted to its search directory.

I wrote about this last year (click here for article) and wondered how Versign could get away with something like this. Apparently, they won't!

See "Fahrenheit 9/11," form your own opinion

July 20, 2004

This is not meant to be for or against Michael Moore's controversial new film, "Fahrenheit 9/11," only an urging to see the movie. It seems to me that much of America has become complacent about their views of the country, even to the point of not really caring what is going on.

Now maybe some of you have a job where you just punch in and punch out and really don't care what's happening above you. Sometimes there's power in ignorance. I guess I just don't work like that.

Discuss, don't fight online

July 19, 2004

Some of you probably troll message boards from time to time, noticing how users will get hopping mad because a random person called them, or their favorite team, a bad name. If you continue reading the thread, you will probably notice other users taking both sides, and if you visit the same message board a few months later, there will surely be a similar thread with different people involved.

Martha Stewart: hot or not?

July 17, 2004

As you've heard by now, Martha Stewart has been sentenced to five months in prison and five months of home incarceration after being found guilty of insider trading and lying to investigators about it. She has even compared herself to Nelson Mandela, which I could be wrong about this, but I don't remember Mandela making crafts on TV when speaking against apartheid.

Baltimore Book Festival school fundraiser

September 24, 2009

I plan to attend the 2009 edition of the Baltimore Book Festival ... as a customer, though, not as a vendor. But I still feel as if I should be more a part of the action. So, for the rest of September, I decided to give away a few copies of my workplace humor novel, "The Developers," in conjunction with raising money for Southwest Baltimore Charter School.

It's post time for shopping season

December 4, 2000

Every year on the day after Thanksgiving, the media covers 13,205,129,675 stories about how it's the busiest shopping day of the year. A story in the paper says Biff Smith got to K-Mart at 2 a.m. so he could be first in line to buy the newest Pokemon stuff for his son. Then there's a TV shot of Emma Jean Santaclaus, who purchased $5,000 worth of Barbie accessories for her 27 children. Then on radio, an anonymous man outside any mall says, "Yeah, it's pretty crowded in there. I guess I picked the wrong day to get my watch fixed."

Book review: "Ficciones" by Jorge Luis Borges

July 23, 2007

When I read a bad book, I finish it, even if it takes me forever. If I read a good book, I want to keep reading it, as much as possible, until I'm at the ending.

Woman wins after being fired for 'confrontational' email

September 7, 2009

There are numerous ways to get people's attention in an email, although, let's face it, people would rather watch YouTube videos than read emails. But if you work at the New Zealand firm ProCare, you may want to avoid anything other than basic black text. Two years ago, the company fired Vicki Walker for sending an email that highlighted a specific date and time in red, as well as an important message in all caps.

Holiday sale!

December 3, 2006

As you know, I don't have too many things to sell ... just books. But it is the holiday season, so I thought I might try to unload some of "The Developers" stock I have. During the month of October, I'm offering 2-for-1, which translates to $14 for two books. This way, you can purchase one for yourself and one for a gift!

It has become difficult to sell what I have because of the exclusive contract I have with my distributor. I can no longer sell directly to bookstores or libraries. However, I am allowed to sell to individuals.
