Don't let Web navigation cause too many detours

July 1, 2003

I'm sure you've seen it: A Web site that has an amazing design, with bright

colors, animation and various neat effects. But after the awe goes away (10

seconds later) you begin to wonder: Where am I supposed to click?

A large portion

of Web designers have this problem. They think the more creative they

are, the better the Web site becomes. While uniqueness is key

to making a site design stand out, it is important to remember the end user.

That's you! Forgetting that Internet pages should be geared toward the

Video games meant to be played, just not all at once

June 15, 2003

I thought I had finally recovered from my addiction, but it has come back

to haunt me. Luckily, I am able to handle it through indulging for short periods

of time, and it mysteriously goes away, almost as fast as

it hit me.

Yes, you guessed it. The addiction is video games. Another good way

for me to stay away from video games is to just be so freakin' busy that

I don't have

time to play. But I have to make time for Circus

Web technology patents rendered useless by W3C

June 1, 2003

Just when I can't find a topic to produce a column, and the only thing that

comes to mind is record-size

exotic fish, up pops something that should allow

me to keep my job for at least another few months.

From a story

on PC World,

the World Wide Web Consortium announced a formal policy ensuring

that key Web technologies, even if patented,

Test your compatibility with celebrities

May 15, 2003

If you were greatly anticipating my column this week, I have something a little

different than normal in store for you. Actually, if you are really anticipating

my column ANY week, I recommend you seek professional help, because that is

not normal.

I have created a simple compatibility test, which matches you, the

reader with

you, the movie star/singer. If you are one of the 12 selected celebrities

who are on the list, and you find out you are not compatible with yourself,

it's

In the tech world, a lot happens in two hours

May 1, 2003

It takes me anywhere from 45 minutes to two hours to write this column. Every

two hours in the world, the following things, on average, occur:

A crock of a column

May 7, 1999

Most people probably think Crock-Pots, stoneware slow cookers, are about as interesting as clothes hangers. They take up space, are decorated with small vegetable pictures and stand out like a drunk at a frat party.

But the real question concerning the cookware is — how come everything you put in a Crock-Pot always tastes like ... a Crock-Pot?

Search engine optimization is a pizza cake

October 14, 2002

I hope at least a few of the 17 people who read this column are interested in building their own Web site, or already have, or would want to if all the letters on their keyboard weren't missing.

The trouble with starting from scratch on the Internet is it's tough to find your newly created URL in the search engine. The good news is there are ways to make it easier. The bad news is you will need more than just the return and shift keys to accomplish this.

Converse with your computer even when not at work

August 13, 2001

Just like any insane person, I do a fair share of talking to my computer. Amazingly enough, it never seems to talk back, even after the constant urging to get something done or to stop crashing.

Unnamed musician mad at MySpace

June 12, 2006

The recent buzz on the news wire is that there's a clause in the MySpace agreement that allows the social networking site a royalty-free, worldwide licence to publicly display posted content.

My reaction, along with the most obvious reaction to this, is simply "Duh."

Books coming to Owensboro

June 18, 2013

I haven't had a book event in some time, so I'm headed over to Owensboro on July 1 to catch up with friends and sign a few copies of Corporate Ties. From 6-7 pm, show up at Gambrinus Libation Emporium for a free book with a $10 purchase. If you already have a book, stop by and meet the family!
