Just when you think computers will finally stop complaining about the Gregorian calendar, it appears there are numerous problems just waiting to happen.
We have only 34 years until the Y2038 bug finally finds us. It's hard to say right now how big the bug will be, but I'm guessing somewhere between a mosquito and a giant praying mantis.
They say there's no such thing as a free lunch, but I've had a couple before. One or two even came with fries. But if anyone tells you there's no such thing as a free book, you can tell them that's false as well.
Every browser has its good and bad moments, but it's sure seems like most moments are bad for Internet Explorer. Recently it was announced that people using IE 6 were vulnerable, even if Windows XP Service Pack Two is installed.
Microsoft reported one of these flaws last year, but there are still no patches for these flaws, which are described as "extremely critical" ones.

The HackersLab is free webspace that contains video game-type levels. The site, which began in 1999, is an alternative for hackers so instead of tearing down the Internet, they might be able to sharpen their skills for a better good.
While most experts would jump at the opportunity to tell you that the Internet is a relatively new invention, apparently not all places on the World Wide Web agree. The Institute of Internet History clearly describes the foundations being set as far back as 1839. That's when Aldophus B. Huxley came up with the idea of creating better punch cards, which led to a "steam pattern system" the following year.
If you haven't been to Friendster lately, it might be time to go back and check it out. Released in September, Friendster 2.0 appears to be not only leading the way with online social networking, but it may also be replacing Internet dating websites.
There are a fair amount of improvements with the new Friendster, including the following:

- Customizable Profile: Ability to use HTML or CSS for your profile
There has been a lot of speculation lately about how much Google is worth, what will happen when the company goes public with shares, what's the difference between a google and a gaggle, etc.
So I did a Google news search on Google. Apparently the financial world is no longer so smitten with the search engine and more company. It seems the IPO figure Google is expecting is unflated, and on top of that, the company is buying back shares offered in advance to employees.
I'm running out of ideas for different welcome columns. It seems as if I write more welcome columns than actual columns about computers or humor or computer humor or large chameleons.
I have two more book appearances this month, both during the last full weekend in September. I'll be at both the Baltimore Book Festival and Baltimore Comic-Con.
See that guy in the office next to you? He might be crazy, but he's not quite as crazy as he was a few years ago.
According to my extremely scientific Ultimate Crazy Survey, readers have decreased their craziness by almost three points, from 37 to 34.3. These results were determined by taking the square root of each participant's name, converted into ASCII values, multiplied by a factorial of Avogadro's Number, depending on what time zone you live in. Or maybe it was just by taking point totals from each question, I cannot remember.
