20,000 leagues under the PC

December 8, 2004

It's bad enough to receive a boatload of forwards each week, and it's that much worse to receive repeat forwards. But when you receive the exact same forward from two different people within almost a week's time, well, that's called noteworthy. Especially when it's just another urban legend.

Is it ever appropriate to use profanities in an email?

December 6, 2004

It's hard to ever say never, especially when it comes to email. The advice committee decided 4-1 that while cussing online isn't necessarily a good thing, it can come in handy every once in awhile. Click here to read the final opinions.

If you need advice about something, and you, too, think many mainstream columnists don't understand today's world, email the Good Advice Committee. Surely we'll come up with something you can use to justify your position ... there's five of us!

GAC: Is it ever appropriate to use profanities in an email?

December 6, 2004

QUESTION

Is it ever appropriate to use profanities in an email?

LAEL: YES

It's okay by my standards to use profanities in email to people that you would normally say profantities when speaking. However, you should becareful not to tell grandma to kick @ss in tomorrow's bingo tournament ... As with all things email related, you should be careful what you write because you never know who is going to see it.

AMANDA: YES

Analyzing recreated events can be a good thing, even in JFK game

December 3, 2004

I'm not going to jump on the bandwagon and say the new video game JFK Reloaded is a disgrace. More importantly, a game like this could revolutionize our way of regarding historical events.

Amazingly, Hawaii and basketball do mix

November 29, 2004

I have returned. Oh yeah, you probably didn't even know I was gone. I took a little vacation to Hawaii for snorkeling and a basketball tournament. Although there were many high profile people there in the stands

Super Recognisers unite!

August 1, 2021

During high school and college, I worked at Kentucky Kingdom amusement park in Louisville, Ky. Besides battling racuous crowds and the blazing heat, one thing that was interesting to me was trying to keep track of the different people I was seeing throughout the day. As a games attendant (a.k.a. carnival barker), I would attempt to personally say things to people that I saw multiple times, whether at different games or at different parts of the park. This was mostly just a sales tactic, and I think the customers likely thought I was training to have my own magic show.

How many friends is too many?

July 30, 2004

A couple of friends have been in a heated debate off and on during the last few months regarding Friendster. The bad news is there hasn't been a resolution yet, but the good news is they are both glad to see Alf back on TV.

Columns appearing in new publication

September 16, 2006

I have a new outlet for my writings to appear, yet I'm curious if the words will be larger, since everything is bigger in Texas.

The newest publication to pick up my columns is Near Northwest Houston, which I would gather is near northwest Houston. The monthly print edition circulates in the area and is available on the website. In September's edition, there's a column I had previously written, as well as information about my book, "The Developers."

First banner ad fairly frightening

January 27, 2006

I'm still trying to find that person (or animal) out there who enjoys banner ads, but so far, I've been unsuccessful. Even still, it's difficult to discount the fact that banner ads can be effective, even without clicking on them. If the ad has been cleverly designed to resonate with Internet users, then possibly it has done the job.

STAR WARS ALERT

May 18, 2005

The movie is officially out. Move along and see it.
