Be careful, your domain name might be transferred

November 10, 2004

Transferring any domain to your own control is about to be come a breeze. Or maybe not.

Starting Nov. 12, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) began utilizing a new Policy on Transfer of Registrations between Registrars. The policy states that if there is a request made on a domain by someone, and if that request has not been denied within five days, the registrar will be allowed to reward the domain to the requesting party.

Fans of fake Dr Pepper UNITE!

November 7, 2004

I don't think there is an official group named FOFDP (fans of fake Dr Pepper), but after viewing the Faked Dr Pepper website, I'm concerned that there isn't.

Who would have known there are more than 100 versions of the Waco, Texas, soft drink? This site contains a collection of the drinks and a simple taste rating, from Dr. Riffic (five Dr Pepper cans) to Dr. Rush (described as "taking a handful of grass and dirt and drinking it").

GAC: Adding music to a website

November 4, 2004

QUESTION

Do you think it's a good idea to have music playing in the background on a website?

AMANDA: YES

Adding music to a website

November 4, 2004

I haven't seen any exact data on this, because I'm not even sure it's available, but I'm guessing perhaps one in eight websites have background music playing on them. While some sites use the music to promote a musician's new release, others apparently prefer to remind you of standing in an elevator for an infinite amount of time.

The election is over ... so what happens now?

November 2, 2004

Either your guy won or he lost. OK, maybe he didn't run at all, or maybe your guy is imaginary. Regardless, the voting is over, so it's time to move on.

But will everyone be nice to each other? At Vigil For Civility, that's the hope. The site asks people to basically support the winner of the presidential race and try to work toward uniting the American people again.

DNS -- come on down!

February 5, 2001

I would bet my lunch money that to get to the page you are currently reading, you probably didn't type a 32-bit numeric address written as four numbers separated by periods.

Book review: "Return from a Comatose Mind" by Jason Deierlein

November 17, 2007

In general, I'm not a huge fan of inspirational books. I think that people have become enamored with novels like these because they need motivation to make something out of their lives. But, more times than not, once they've put the book away, they revert back to their usual lives and don't make any changes. Not only that, but many inspirational books are too shallow and bland to reach the surface of giving people hope.

Rainbow shine

December 1, 2016

By Ava

Once upon a time, there was a girl who is a princess named Ava. There is also another princess named Lily. There also was a princess named Clara, and we all played on the playground. And then, there was a mommy and daddy. There also was a playground where we can all play. The end.

Coders in the movies, one more time

May 6, 2007

No score and four years ago (sorry, but I visited Gettysburg this weekend), I wrote a column about the presence of computer programming in movies. The idea spawned from a viewing of Swordfish, but of course in recent times, if a movie didn't have some type of computer in them, the younger generation would probably be confused.

Next up: Baltimore's Inner Harbor

August 28, 2006

I'm taking a little vacation this weekend, but I won't be stopping the book tour just yet. I'll be at the Barnes & Noble in Baltimore's Inner Harbor 3-5 p.m. Sept. 1 for a little book signing and discussion about "The Developers."

I was going to be in the area because I'm going up there to see my beautiful girlfriend. So I figured, well, I might as well try to sell some books while she's finishing up with her kindergarten class for the day.
