How has the web changed your life? That's the question that users around the world are answering today to celebrate OneWebDay.
First off, who would have thought to combine capitalized words, minus the spaces, for the name of something anyway? Yes, it was used before the Internet for various things, including the names of racehorses. OneWebDay, even the word form itself, has become something due to this rapidly advancing form of technology.
While it's fairly simple to find just about anything on the Internet, author Ben Woods says there's one thing that sticks out the most: crazy people.
Woods will be signing and discussing his new fictional workplace humor book, "The Developers," 2-4 p.m. Sept. 29 in the Lawson Commons area in the new Lawson Computer Science Building (305 N. University St.). He will also take part in the Barnes and Noble Authors Day 4-7 p.m. Sept. 30 in Lafayette (2323 Sagamore Parkway South).
One of the toughest things I have found as a new novelist is finding objective reviews. It seems that most friends and family members, as truthful as they may be, have insider information that makes it difficult to be unbiased. While I have received a few great reviews from people I did not know, I haven't received a large amount of bad ones. Which might be good, but then again, who wants to review a bad book?
Just in case you have forgotten, Sept. 19 is a special day. Yes, it's that day each year when you are allowed to talk like a pirate, and be thanked for doing so.
Now that it's official, and Pluto has been assigned a number as a dwarf planet, it's important to sort out exactly what happened, and why. And for all you Pluto lovers out there, please, hear me out before attempting to strangle someone with your outdated solar system model.
For those of you who huge basketball fans, here's a little breather from March Madness. All right, maybe you don't need a break from the action, but seriously, it's Monday. There are no NCAA games today. Even Dick Vitale takes a day off.
If I told you that somewhere in the world, there sits a huge container filled with salt, one grain for each person on the planet at the very moment, would you believe me? Of course not, but little do you know that it does, indeed, exist at The Salt Monument in Boulder, Colo.
I'll be heading back to familiar territory this weekend as I host a book talk in Crawfordsville, Ind., at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Crawfordsville Public Library. A little later in the day (3 p.m. CST), I'll be at the Champaign, Ill., Borders.
I lived in Crawfordsville in 1998-99, working at the Journal Review during my time there. I will be discussing writing and publishing at the library, as well as explaining the process of putting together my novel, The Developers.
Some people I know who refuse to date people online say so for one simple reason: "I don't know if people are who they say they are."
This is a funny comment first off because even if you met people out somewhere, at work, etc., you rarely don't know who they are until you REALLY know them. Even then, it's debatable how well you know them, not just their physical appearances, but their personalities as well.
IM tellin' takes a look at a bad joke gone .. er .. bad. It's important to note, however, that one great thing about chatting online is that you do have the capability to make up your own sound effects.
