It's startling to see what you can find on the Internet these days. Of course, I don't need to tell you this ... you're reading this article as it is. I'm not sure if it's a good thing or not to be sitting at work and have to shield your computer immediately due to something that just popped up on your screen. In any case, it's anyone's guess as to how long the Internet will stand as it is.
"The Developers" book tour is almost over, at least, for now. I will be signing and discussing the book 12-2 p.m. Oct. 15 at the Evansville Barnes & Noble (624 S Green River Rd). He will then make his final stop 4-6 p.m. at the Owensboro Books-A-Million (4606 Frederica Street).
These cities will be the 10th and 11th during my tour. I have had a lot of fun and have met a lot of people, many of whom are totally insane. At least I have pegged my audience correctly!
I finally returned to the Purdue campus during the weekend, and it didn't take me long to realize how much I missed it. Even though it has been five years, and a plethora of new buildings have gone up all across Lafayette and West Lafayette, there were still plenty of things to reminisce about.
Just when you thought you had everything you needed to have a great weekend (well, minus a date and money for that date), there are a few things for your computer that you probably don't have.
Then again, some of these things, it's probably better that you don't have them.
How has the web changed your life? That's the question that users around the world are answering today to celebrate OneWebDay.
First off, who would have thought to combine capitalized words, minus the spaces, for the name of something anyway? Yes, it was used before the Internet for various things, including the names of racehorses. OneWebDay, even the word form itself, has become something due to this rapidly advancing form of technology.
It's bad enough when you can't win a simple game of cards with your family. But when you're a poker champion and have to play against multiple bots colluding against you, well, it's time to take up something else, maybe shuffleboard.
I will be making three book appearances in September, marking my first events since the early summer. Yeah, work and other things have gotten in the way! First, on Sept. 13, I will be selling books and raising money for the Waverly branch of Baltimore's Pratt Library. I'll also be there doing a little volunteer work, as I tutor at the Waverly library on a weekly basis.
The distinction between reality and not reality has intrigued society for thousands of years. When I say society, though, I suppose I'm discussing only those individuals who actually want to discern the difference between the two, since it is readily apparent that a great deal of people rather enjoy the blur between the two worlds. In the past, "unreality" could be considered anything from a dream sequence to joining a secret cult to playing/cheering for your favorite sports team. However, with technology at the helm, we have another life available: one that is virtual.
As a web developer, I have always heard stories pertaining to the lack of knowledge people have about computers in general. Maybe you have heard the one about the person who called tech support because her computer wouldn't come on ... during a power outage. Or maybe you are familiar with the story about the guy who used his CD tray as a cup holder.
The recent buzz on the news wire is that there's a clause in the MySpace agreement that allows the social networking site a royalty-free, worldwide licence to publicly display posted content.
My reaction, along with the most obvious reaction to this, is simply "Duh."
