GAC: Should popup ads be illegal on the Internet?

September 21, 2004

QUESTION

Should popup ads be illegal on the Internet?

LINDA: NO

Some pop-ups are necessary, but most are just annoying. There should be a notice displayed to inform you about a pop-up and give you the decisions as to whether you want to view it or not.

NATE: NO

Hate mail for a humor columnist is funny

September 19, 2004

I received an email from Morgan a couple of weeks ago, wondering why I was posing as a global warming expert. The funny thing is, I don't ever recall mentioning I was a global warming expert, although I did write a column about it.

Report: Correlation between elderly health, gambling

September 16, 2004

A recent study published in the American Journal of Psychiatry shows that there is at least some commonality between the health of the elderly and whether or not they visit gaming facilities. Click here to check out the abstract and the full study.

Now THIS is cooking

September 15, 2004

If you've ever seen a recipe in a cookbook, you've probably noticed how complicated the instructions can be. (Eds. note: If you have never seen a recipe, you might want to never admit that in public, or at least, never while you are serving any type of casserole to a large group of hungry sumo wrestlers.) Cooking For Engineers makes fixing new dishes a breeze by displaying the directions in an easy-to-use, moderately graphical format.

Good news from Linux

September 13, 2004

Open source will no longer mean open season for little standardization when it comes to the Linux operating system.

On Sept. 14, The Free Standards Group announced the availability of Linux Standard Base (LSB) 2.0, an essential component for the long-term market success of Linux. The best part about it is that many major players who have Linux-based solutions, including IBM, Intel, Dell, and Hewlett-Packard, are endorsing LSB.

Is it wrong to download songs for free from the Internet?

August 13, 2004

Even though there's a growing number of websites that allow visitors to pay chump change for a song from your favorite artist, many people are still using free sites as their main way to obtain songs.

This question was posed to the Good Advice Committee, which is comprised of five individuals (including me) who well aware of the numerous dilemnas posed by today's technology. The GAC will tackle online ethical situations in upcoming editions.

Pay up, then Meetup

April 20, 2005

The ever-popular Meetup.com website will begin charging its groups a monthly fee beginning May 1, 2005, and while the price is still fairly cheap, it's more than free.

The site announced changes recently, obviously in an effort to earn some dough from users. Then again, it's probably going to be a tough sell considering the users never anticipated paying anything from the start.

Crazy sea creatures have been around for awhile

January 25, 2005

Hopefully this gets to you before you open your inbox and see that it has been forwarded by 500 of your "closest" friends, including that guy from the gym who always tries to steal your towel.

People have reported receiving emails regarding bizarre sea creatures, apparently trudged up by the recent tsunami disaster. While the message does sound plausible, it is completely incorrect. Check out snopes.com for the full story.

Maybe AOL is now run by just computers

November 12, 2004

Why do so many people use AOL? Do they think that's the only Internet Service Provider in existence? Are they entranced by receiving CDs in the mail, thinking if they just join, they won't receive them anymore? Is that little yellow guy, who apparently is always running to find his face, which happens to be the Wal-Mart logo, just too cool to pass up?

Are those computers actually being recycled?

November 20, 2007

You've probably seen the signs hanging around your place of business, or maybe you've seen ads in the newspaper promoting a way to get rid of your old computer. "Donate your computer to a third-world school!" or "We recycle your old monitors!" Those seem like noble ideas, but they also beg the question: What is actually being done with your trash?
