Cell phone services seem similar

January 6, 2003

I don't consider myself an expert in too many things,

at least outside of baseball history, state capitals

and having a tendency to attract strange females. But

after extensive research on determining the best cell

phone service, maybe I have found my calling.

HA! My

calling! Get it? Anyway, I figured the least I could

do with this newfound ability is to report

The Christmas hits don't stop here

December 23, 2002

What do Elvis, Bing Crosby and Wham all have in common? No, besides being three of the top musical acts of the 20th century. Of course! They all have had Christmas hits!

Company placing e-commerce sites in jeopardy

November 25, 2002

This just in from the Department of You Can't Be Serious: Pangea Intellectual Properties (PanIP), a technology development company based in San Diego, is suing boatloads of companies for infringing on its patents. The company claims to have patents on e-commerce and Web-based financial banking systems, which means any Web site that conducts shopping on the Internet is violating a patent and could be sued as well.

To quote one of my favorite Different Strokes characters: "Whatcha talkin' bout, Willis?"

Excel can equal magic

November 9, 2002

I decided to take a break from talking about Web sites and Internet applications for at least one column. Amazingly enough, there are other programs on your computer or close by that can be beneficial. The one I plan to discuss today is more useful than a paperweight, although it may not be as helpful as a stapler or rubber band or the largest watergun museum on the Internet.

Your computer equipment needs a bath

October 28, 2002

There are things I'd rather do than clean my computer

mouse. Really, there are. For instance, licking envelopes

is fun. I also like to cut duct tape with dull scissors.

The thing that separates these other items with cleaning

a mouse is that I need my mouse to perform about 95

percent of my work duties. I need duct tape and envelopes

the other 5 percent whenever I mail chain letters to

Accolades from the first grade

February 27, 2020
Letter from first grade

Lily, my 6-year-old daughter, wanted to bring in copies of The Special Delivery for her friends at school. Not only does it appear that they enjoyed the gift, but they took a bit of class time to say what they enjoyed the most!

Here is the text:

Dear Mr. Woods,

Wait, people still use IE 3?

April 18, 2008

So the news out recently is that PayPal is going to block "unsafe browsers." I'm not talking about people here, but actually web browsers. How will PayPal know if something is unsafe? Good question, but one way they will tell, according to this article, is by determining the version of the actual browser.

Winning, but before a true prize even existed

April 3, 2024

This year, 2024, marks the 42nd year (should be 43 years in a row since the tournament was canceled in 2020 due to COVID) that I have picked at least one NCAA men’s basketball bracket. I have copies of many of them, including the one from 1981, when I picked my Louisville Cardinals to win the championship. That was the year they lost their first game on a halfcourt shot. Some people might be deterred after that jarring experience, but not me! Then again, I was only 5 when it happened.

Chuck Palahniuk coming to Louisville

June 4, 2006

If you're a fan of "Fight Club" or "Choke," you won't want to miss Chuck Palahnik's appearance at 7 p.m. June 7 in The Clifton Center Reception Hall (2117 Payne Avenue). Carmichael's Bookstore is hosting the event, but due to the expected crowd, the venue has been moved just down the road. Palahniuk will be reading from his new book, "Haunted," and will be signing books as well.

I owe a bit to Palahniuk because after reading "Choke," I realized that maybe I could write "The Developers." Not that my stuff is as good, but it's a similar style ... at least, I'd like to think so.

Don't let DoS attacks send you to the circus

October 16, 2000

Sometimes Web sites don't work. They just don't. There are plenty of reasons, including &quot the sun was in my eyes,&quot why a particular site will not work. It's definitely frustrating when you know other sites are working, except the one you want to go to, The Original World Famous Home Appliance Shooting Page, just won't boot.
