Relive the original Atari

August 22, 2008

It's amazing how many people online now have never experienced the original Atari. You still see Space Invaders and Centipede appear in various places occasionally, but I wonder how many people even know how popular these games were in the late 70s and early 80s.

New website

August 21, 2008

If you're here, you've probably already figured this out. But just in case you aren't paying attention ... here's to the new and improved website!

I'll be adding plenty more items in the upcoming weeks and months, but the tough part was getting it started. I've built the site using MODx, which has to be one of the best, if not the best, PHP-driven content management system.

Feel free to check out new and old articles, leave comments, take the surveys and let me know if you find stuff that doesn't work!

McCain, Obama on technology issues

August 18, 2008

There are a lot of reasons to make the best choice for president this fall. As a technology writer, I think it is my duty to mention something about the election. The problem is that I have not spent much time delving into the similarities and differences between the candidates with regard to technology.

However, other people have. I'll also admit that I have only skimmed these articles, so we can read them in more detail together!

August special: "The Developers" for under a buck

August 8, 2008

Lately I've been reading "Catch-22" by Joseph Heller. It's a great book
(watch for a review in the future), but I noticed last week that the
paperback price tag was 95 cents. The copy I'm reading is nearly 50
years old, but even still, how could the publisher make money selling
books for under a buck?

Cyber war came before the real thing

August 6, 2008

What better way to cripple a nation your trying to topple than to take down key websites in the country.

Be careful with the Wii

December 9, 2006

The new Wii gaming solution hasn't been out for very long, and it appears there are two sides of the coin at the moment. The first side is that people are having a blast making the actual motions needed in certain games. The flip side is that people apparently are breaking numerous appliances using the motion controls.

Not sure how you did it, but you found my site

June 27, 2004

Welcome to BenWoods.com! I decided that since my readership was up to about 24 people, I should devote an entire Web site to it. So here it is!

All of my columns published during the last four years should be available here. If not, I need to check the lost and found because it's possible one or two ran away. A key ingredient to the current site is the newest survey, the Ultimate Crazy Survey. It's the best of the ones I've made so far, to check it out when you have time.

Virtual island not cheap

December 17, 2004

I've always wanted my own island. Wouldn't it be nice to just have a place, surrounded by water, where you could go and hang out and be left alone, at least until someone built a bridge to it? Apparently I missed my chance the other day when someone bought an island online for $26,500. That seems pretty cheap.

Oh. That island is only virtual, in a video game called Project Entropia. So imaginary islands are going for over 20 G's these days. Maybe I should invest in something else, like a virtual bridge.

Book review: 'Sex, Drugs and Cocoa Puffs' by Chuck Klosterman

April 13, 2007

If you are at the very least familiar with pop culture humor, you are probably know about Chuck Klosterman. I'm not insinuating that you've read all of is works or anything like that, but perhaps you've heard his name before.

New stalking, er, tracking, er, technology tool

February 5, 2009

Google recently announced a new product available for a number of cell phone devices called Google Latitude. The program allows you to see other people, assuming they have opted into the system, on a Google-generated map.
