Relive the original Atari

August 22, 2008

It's amazing how many people online now have never experienced the original Atari. You still see Space Invaders and Centipede appear in various places occasionally, but I wonder how many people even know how popular these games were in the late 70s and early 80s.

New website

August 21, 2008

If you're here, you've probably already figured this out. But just in case you aren't paying attention ... here's to the new and improved website!

I'll be adding plenty more items in the upcoming weeks and months, but the tough part was getting it started. I've built the site using MODx, which has to be one of the best, if not the best, PHP-driven content management system.

Feel free to check out new and old articles, leave comments, take the surveys and let me know if you find stuff that doesn't work!

McCain, Obama on technology issues

August 18, 2008

There are a lot of reasons to make the best choice for president this fall. As a technology writer, I think it is my duty to mention something about the election. The problem is that I have not spent much time delving into the similarities and differences between the candidates with regard to technology.

However, other people have. I'll also admit that I have only skimmed these articles, so we can read them in more detail together!

August special: "The Developers" for under a buck

August 8, 2008

Lately I've been reading "Catch-22" by Joseph Heller. It's a great book
(watch for a review in the future), but I noticed last week that the
paperback price tag was 95 cents. The copy I'm reading is nearly 50
years old, but even still, how could the publisher make money selling
books for under a buck?

Cyber war came before the real thing

August 6, 2008

What better way to cripple a nation your trying to topple than to take down key websites in the country.

Wave goodbye to Google Wave

August 9, 2010

Google recently made a mildly surprising announcement (at least, to me) that the company is shutting down its online collaboration tool, Wave. Google does a lot of cool, neat and worthy stuff obviously, and I think Wave fits into this category. It's just that the actual marketing of it was rather peculiar.

Zzzzzz ... uh? Yes, I'm at work!

February 18, 2007

Sitting in front of a computer all day (not to be confused with Otis Redding's "Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay") isn't that glamorous. In fact, it's pretty easy to relax, lose focus on what you are typing slightly, hIT teh wrogn keys, and ... er, what was I saying?

Oh yes, the issue of people falling asleep at their cubes. Wouldn't it be nice to have nap time? At least in New Jersey, bosses aren't enamored with the notion of providing beds for employees.

Time stands still when waiting for Star Wars

May 13, 2002

I finally discovered something I could not easily find on the Internet: tickets for the newest Star Wars movie.

Sure, it is still a few days before "Attack of the Clones" opens in the United States, but I should already have tickets in my hand. I'm not claiming to be the biggest Star Wars fan in history. I've never dressed up as Darth Vader in public or dated a girl named Yoda. True, she was from Dagobah. But I do have a lot of Star Wars memorabilia hanging on my walls at home, and all of my action figures are stashed away in places I can get to easily.

There's a lot of hatin' for Valentine's Day

February 14, 2006

If you're one of the people who don't like Valentine's Day, or you don't even acknowledge the existence of it, there's additional earth-shattering news you may want to know.

It seems like you might be in the majority now.

There are a fair amount of sites on the web blasting Valentine's Day, starting with Uncyclopedia. Unfortunately, I don't have time to give other sites because I have to try to find all of them.

There are a lot of Doppelgangers out there

August 12, 2004

More than two years ago, I wrote a column about how people think I look like other people. Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on how you see this), I'm not the only person who experiences this look-a-like problem. Here are some comments:
