Relive the original Atari

August 22, 2008

It's amazing how many people online now have never experienced the original Atari. You still see Space Invaders and Centipede appear in various places occasionally, but I wonder how many people even know how popular these games were in the late 70s and early 80s.

New website

August 21, 2008

If you're here, you've probably already figured this out. But just in case you aren't paying attention ... here's to the new and improved website!

I'll be adding plenty more items in the upcoming weeks and months, but the tough part was getting it started. I've built the site using MODx, which has to be one of the best, if not the best, PHP-driven content management system.

Feel free to check out new and old articles, leave comments, take the surveys and let me know if you find stuff that doesn't work!

McCain, Obama on technology issues

August 18, 2008

There are a lot of reasons to make the best choice for president this fall. As a technology writer, I think it is my duty to mention something about the election. The problem is that I have not spent much time delving into the similarities and differences between the candidates with regard to technology.

However, other people have. I'll also admit that I have only skimmed these articles, so we can read them in more detail together!

August special: "The Developers" for under a buck

August 8, 2008

Lately I've been reading "Catch-22" by Joseph Heller. It's a great book
(watch for a review in the future), but I noticed last week that the
paperback price tag was 95 cents. The copy I'm reading is nearly 50
years old, but even still, how could the publisher make money selling
books for under a buck?

Cyber war came before the real thing

August 6, 2008

What better way to cripple a nation your trying to topple than to take down key websites in the country.

Find love -- it's right there, under the sink

October 9, 2000

"Believe it or not, I'd rather clean a bathroom than watch a football game."
-- whatever man said this would probably prefer to remain anonymous

I'll give you three guesses to determine where I found this quote. No, not the bakery. No, not the thesaurus. Yes, an online dating service!

New books are in the warehouse

March 16, 2006

The third printing of "The Developers" is now at Biblio Distribution, and will be ready shortly to send out to bookstores and libraries across the country. Over the next few months, I will continue to make marketing pushes in the region, as well as other places in the U.S., to promote my book. Be sure to stay tuned to this site for special promotions with my book and other items in the future.

Open document formats defeated in five states

June 5, 2007

If you just read the headline of this story, maybe you thought "Man, that sucks that I won't be able to open documents in five states. Then again, if I get a job in one of those states, I guess I won't have to stare at a computer screen all day." Before I continue, let me explain what open document format is.

Next stop: Carmichael's on Frankfort Ave.

February 6, 2006

For the fourth straight weekend, I'll be making a book appearance, this time at home in Louisville, Ky. I'll be at Carmichael's (2720 Frankfort Avenue) 4-6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 12. Make sure you don't go to the Bardstown Road one because I won't be there!

Please stop in and say hi to me or my local publicist, Elizabeth Woods, if you get a chance. Elizabeth is my grandma, one of the main proofreaders for 'The Developers' and an avid bingo player.

Book review: "The Jungle" by Upton Sinclair

January 14, 2008

Nearly everyone I have talked to has heard of Upton Sinclair, a muckraker at the turn of the 20th Century. And more often than that, people have heard of "The Jungle," one of his masterpieces. Yet I have not encountered a single person who has read the book, nor anyone who knows more about the book than its focus on the meat-packing industry.
