The only real surprise in the latest Census Bureau report regarding the Internet is the fact that the information is probably already out of date. Then again, that's probably not even a surprise.
"Computer and Internet Use in the United States: 2003" shows that home Internet usage hit 55 percent by 2003, according to a recent UPI article. As expected, people using the Internet to find information increased exponentially since 1997 (7 to 40 percent); close to one-third of people used the Internet to purchase a product or service, up from 2 percent; and more than three quarters of households with school-age children had a computer, with 67 percent having Internet access.
Even though 45 percent of total households did not have the Internet in 2003, that number is probably even lower today. With the advent of more people being online in the first place, maybe the Census Bureau will have the opportunity to produce more current news in future releases!
