Free fuel for your car

Aug 14, 2005

With the skyrocketing price of gasoline (the last I checked, it was cheaper to buy a new car that comes with a full tank of gas than to fill up my own car), many people are looking for transportation alternatives. While the teleport is still under construction (Seriously! I'm almost finished with it!), one thing that is available is a modification kit for your vehicle so you can run your car on vegetable oil.

At Greasecar Vegetable Fuel Systems, you can find the supplies and instructions to convert any diesel engine to run just on vegetable oil. The base kit comes with everything you need to modify your fuel system, at least, that's what it says. At $795 (as of August 2005), that seems reasonable, especially considering many of the people driving the modded vehicles said they obtain used oil for free from local restaurants.

Yes, you heard that right ... free fuel for your car. Scott McGrath, who drives a 2002 Volkswagen Golf TDI, gets 45 mpg city, 53 mpg highway in his vehicle. Plus, his car usually smells like french fries, which is making me hungry just thinking about it.

If vegetable oil isn't your thing, there are other ways to save money on vehicle fuel. For instance, Ron Gremban added 18 batteries to his Toyota Prius hybrid and now gets 250 miles per gallon. In the future, more car manufacturers are sure to create more modded vehicles, so hopefully they will be available soon for consumption ... with or without the scent of french fries.
