Please tell that man to return his jacket to the Riddler

Sep 23, 2004

Matthew Lesko is an interesting and eccentric character. You know him from his famous stints on both TV and radio infomercials. He's the guy who claims you can get free money from the government basically just by reading his book.

Lesko claims there are thousands of government grants waiting for people to use them, as evidenced by Free Government Grants by Matthew Lesko! It definitely is tempting, and my mom always told me never to talk to strangers, but always believe a man with a bow tie, plastered with question marks.

Internet users give mixed results. I did a Google search on " 'Matthew Lesko' scam" and found good and bad reviews. The most helpful advice appeared on Idea Cafe's Cyberschmooz. While there is a lot of good information in the book, some of the grants and opportunities can be outdated, depending on your state of residence. One post listed the link to The Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA), which gives all the info, albeit more than likely a little cumbersome to digest.

Listen to Lesko at your own risk, but whatever you do, don't order the book claiming to be Batman. It looks as if the grants in Gotham City have expired.
