Book review: "Crazy '08" by Cait Murphy

Jul 28, 2009

I wouldn't imagine a non-baseball fan would actually pick up a baseball book and read it from cover to cover. If there was a book I would recommend to a person who was interested in history but not a huge baseball buff, it's "Crazy '08" by Cait Murphy. And for a baseball fan, this is one book you wouldn't want to be without.

The book details what has long been considered the greatest year in baseball history: 1908. I'm a Cubs fan, so it's hard for me to dispute that, considering that's the last time the Cubbies won the World Series. However, this book isn't so much about the World Series, nor is it exclusively about either of the Chicago teams (the White Sox were in the AL pennant race). The novel covers a range of sports and historical topics from the late 1800s until the Depression Era.

It seems that "Crazy '08" really hasn't gained the popularity that its author and publisher had hoped. Still, I'm selecting it as one of the top 10 books I've read during the last couple of years.
